Every jubilee year brings pilgrims, celebrations and a special grace to the Church — and the coming years hold an unusually rich sequence of holy years. Here is a guide to the jubilees ahead, from the Year of St. Francis being celebrated right now to the great Jubilee of the Redemption in 2033.
What is a jubilee year?
A jubilee — or holy year — is a year of forgiveness, reconciliation and pilgrimage. Ordinary jubilees are celebrated every 25 years (the most recent was the Great Jubilee of 2000; the next falls in 2050), while extraordinary jubilees are proclaimed by the Pope for special occasions, such as the Jubilee of Mercy (2015–2016) and the Jubilee of Hope (2025). Holy years are marked by the opening of Holy Doors, the granting of indulgences and a call to conversion and charity. Our guide to the 2025 Jubilee and its motto "Peregrinantes in Spem" explains the most recent one in detail.
The Year of St. Francis (2026–2027)
Runs from 10 January 2026 to 10 January 2027 and marks 800 years since the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi. A plenary indulgence is granted to pilgrims who visit any Franciscan church or any church dedicated to St. Francis anywhere in the world. Read the full guide: The Year of St. Francis (2026–2027).
The Compostela Holy Year (2027)
When 25 July falls on a Sunday — as it does in 2027 — Santiago de Compostela celebrates its Jacobean holy year, the Año Santo Jacobeo, with the opening of the cathedral's Holy Door and a plenary indulgence for pilgrims who visit the tomb of St. James. Read more: The Compostela Holy Year 2027.
World Youth Day 2027
The next World Youth Day will be held in Seoul, South Korea, in 2027 — the first World Youth Day in Asia since Manila in 1995. Hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims are expected, and dioceses around the world are already preparing their groups.
The 500th anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe (2031)
In December 2031 the Church will mark 500 years since the apparitions of Our Lady to St. Juan Diego on Tepeyac hill in 1531. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City — the most visited Marian shrine in the world — will be the centre of the celebrations, and the anniversary is expected to draw pilgrims from across the Americas and beyond.
The Jubilee of the Redemption (2033)
Pope Leo XIV has announced an extraordinary jubilee for 2033, marking 2,000 years since the Passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Church last celebrated a jubilee of the Redemption in 1933, the 1900th anniversary, and the 2033 holy year is expected to be the largest Church event since the Great Jubilee of 2000, with preparations already under way in Rome and the Holy Land.
